There has been a lot of talk lately about the glycemic index. Why are people consulting it for weight loss and healthy diet advice? The Glycemic Index, or GI, measures the effects of different food on the human blood sugar level. It labels how quickly carbohydrates are processed into the blood stream, raising blood sugar levels. If a food has a low GI score, it means it is released slowly into the system, keeping those levels stable. A high GI score means it causes a spike in blood sugar levels, caused by insulin. Insulin is a fast worker, when there is excessive blood sugar, and deposits the excess sugar in muscles cells. This stored energy, or glycogen keeps the body going, but when the muscles are full, the rest goes into fat cells. Since the insulin is overreacting, it depletes the blood sugar very quickly, causing the famous energy crash. Foods with a low GI score don’t cause the insulin spike, giving the blood sugar a stable reading over a long period of time because of the slow release of insulin. There are also fewer fat cells formed. This is why low GI food keeps your energy up, and you don’t get hungry as soon after eating a meal.

The GI compares the release of the sugars in different foods in relation to the rate of pure glucose. Pure glucose has a score of 100. If food releases at 70 or higher, it rates as a rapid release, making it a high GI food. These are the foods that should be avoided. Medium GI foods of 56 to 69 are ok in limited quantities. Food with a score of 55 or below is a slow release food, and good for any time. You can affect the GI value of an entire meal by combining the different values. For instance a potato has a GI value of 90 and a chicken breast with 0 on the GI scale would average out in the 45 range scale. So you don’t have to give up high GI foods, just make sure your overall diet is low on the GI.

High GI foods are white flour, cakes, muffins, white potatoes, bananas, and honey. Medium GI foods are red potatoes, jelly and jam, bran muffins, and whole wheat bread. Most tropical fruits are also medium GI. Low GI foods are vegetables, northern fruits, sweet potatoes, whole grain cereal, and meat and dairy products. You can also include popcorn and nuts. Calories still count, of course, so you’ll have to watch that. A low GI diet also helps to control your appetite. So, eating a balanced GI diet and taking colon cleanse tablets will help you have more steady blood sugar levels.

It can be a horrifying thing, to see blood in your bowel movements. The shock of seeing your own blood is bad enough, but to see it in such an unexpected place is even worse. However, there are several different things that can cause this to happen, and believe it or not, they are not life-threatening. They are short-lived conditions that are entirely treatable.

Terms for Bleeding

Terms used in diagnosis refer to the color of the stools. If the stools are black and like tar, they are melena. If they are bright red or maroon colored, it’s called hematochezia. The rectum itself may not be bleeding, but it’s called rectal bleeding because that’s where the blood leaves the body.

Proctitis

While inflammation is the body’s way of healing an injury, chronic or ongoing inflammation in the intestines or colon can cause its own problems. Proctitis is inflammation of the colon that, when it persists, can weaken the lining of the colon. If you have ulcers in your colon, they can cause proctitis. This will cause blood in bowel movements, and you need to see a doctor. While this condition is easily treatable, if allowed to continue untreated, the lining of the rectum could develop holes.

Fistulae

A fistulae is sort of like a tunnel. If you have a fistulae of the anus or rectum, it means there is an opening connecting that organ with the outside or with another organ. In other words, you’ve got a crack inside. It’s actually another one of the inflammatory bowel diseases, as the one mentioned above. Proctitis, Crohn’s disease, and colitis all can cause this condition. With fistulae of this sort, it is actually possible for bowels or urine to leak out of places they wouldn’t normally. Pus from an infection and blood in bowel movements can be the result. While the bleeding itself is not an emergency situation, if your condition has reached this point, you are probably already under a doctor’s care, anyway.

Torn Anal Opening

This is usually caused by constipation. Physical exertion during a bowel movement can cause spasms in the sphincter. Considering that you have 2 of these muscles, the spasms can be quite painful. The inner and outer sphincters must be relaxed for the bowel movement to take place. If you’re constipated, the spasms of the sphincters can cause cracking, which will induce bleeding. This can be eased by increased water consumption and a healthier diet with a little more fiber. Anti-inflammatory medicines can ease the swelling and pain, as well.

Rectal Prolapse

Usually affecting older women, it’s when the rectum falls partially out of the anus. It’s caused by weak muscles and ligaments, and from a fallen pelvic floor. Often, surgery is the only treatment.

Hemorrhoids

The most common cause of blood in bowel movements is hemorrhoids-both inner and outer. These can be treated topically, or removed through surgerya and with Colon Cleanse Tablets.

If you see blood in your bowel movement, don’t panic. It’s actually quite common and, while colon cancer and Crohn’s disease do cause blood in bowel movement, there are also several other causes as well. The blood may be bright red or maroon in color, which is called hematochezia, or it may make your stools black and tarry, which is called melena. Probably the most frightening of the two is the hematochezia, since the sight of our own blood is pretty terrifying, anyway. Even though it’s called rectal bleeding, the blood actually originates further up in the colon or intestines. And, oddly enough, the most frightening disease of all-colon cancer-doesn’t even produce visible blood.

Colon Cancer

Colon cancer is the 3rd most common cancer. It’s also the 3rd most common cause of death from cancer. It claims about 650,000 worldwide every year. A colonoscopy can find the tumors in your colon, rectum, and appendix. The colon, by the way, is your large intestine, not just the passageway to the anus. It goes from the anus, then curves around to the side, and up and over the small intestines. A microscope camera used in the colonoscopy can find the tumors if they are there, and they are then removed surgically. If you have this, you’ll have to go through chemotherapy, but the good news is that early treatment is almost totally successful.

The symptoms of colon cancer can be confused with other illnesses because they are so common-constipation or diarrhea, chronic fatigue, poor appetite, and unexplained weight loss can all be blamed on other things, including nerves. And, blood is not even visible in the bowel movement.

Polyps in the Colon

Polyps in the colon are usually removed during a colonoscopy. They are usually non-cancerous, but can morph into cancer tumors, so removal is standard. They may be flush against the lining of the colon, or they may protrude into the colon cavity. Of course, conditions that cause polyps are obesity, smoking, consumption of alcohol, and poor exercise habits. Family history comes into play, as well.

Diverticulosis and Diverticulitis

The diverticula are little pockets in the colon lining throughout its length. If there is too much pressure in the colon, food can get impacted in these pockets, and then get infected, causing diverticulitis. This can be a serious condition if not treated, as the infection can rupture the diverticula, and cause infection to leak into the abdominal cavity, causing peritonitis.

Diverticulosis is not as severe as diverticulitis, but is a precursor to the more serious disease. Symptoms of diverticulosis are constipation, cramping, bloat, and even vomiting and bleeding. A computed tomography (CT scan) will diagnose the problem. One of the best ways to avoid all of these problems is with a good dietary fiber and Colon Cleanse Tablets. The fiber equalizes the water content of your bowels, halting the problems with constipation and diarrhea. By moving the feces through the bowels, there is no chance for the diverticula to become impacted.
