Ah Time to chip away the ice and put on your heavy overcoat of winter. Gone are the holiday feast and treats. Will your well-mentioned New Year’s resolutions be left buried in a February snow bank.

Now is the perfect time to refocus on exercise and eating habits. It is much easier to begin a walking or running routine now that the biting winds have given way to soft breezes of this year’s mild winter.

The light clothes and swimming pools of summer are only six months away giving you some time to improve your overall health and fitness. By now, we have all heard the exercise pep talk hundreds of times from health professionals and TV cheerleaders. Hopefully, a few good eating habits have been established. Just like that cobwebbed bicycle hanging in your garage, those eating habits may need a quick tune-up for spring and summer months ahead.

Whatever a healthy eating plan is it should include fresh food and only fresh food. Quirky fad diets which come and go like the sun, and evolve around potions and choice-limited repetitive meal plans. Expensive drinks and tablets designed to improve fitness and performance are offered at health-food stores and nutrition centers. Although drastic measures often shed pounds studies show results are temporary at best. Instead of searching endlessly for the quick fix begin by looking at the food in your local grocery store.

After all a healthy eating plan is designed for a lifetime, and a life fuelled by wholesome foods is a much more realistic and satisfying option. Reflecting on the evolution of the basic food groups we learned about years ago in school reveals a reshaping into the Food Guide Pyramid. The pyramid is designed to promote consumption of a variety of foods. Variety is not only important because it provides diversity in food appearance and taste but because each food group provides specific nutrients that the other food groups are less abundant or lacking in.

Eating foods from only one or two groups would result in a nutritionally unbalanced and unhealthy meal plan. Think about the area of your daily food choices which you may need to fine tune. So get ready to rev up your engines as you identify where you may need to fine-tune your daily food choices.

Dairy Foods

This group provides some carbohydrates for energy and protein for tissue growth and maintenance. Calcium for strong bones and also helps with muscle and blood clot function. Food choices to include are skimmed and low-fat milk along with low-fat or no-fat cheeses and yogurt. Low-fat frozen yogurt is also a member of this group.
Meats.

The main source of protein is provided by beef and eggs and fish. Well trimmed cuts along with skinless poultry and egg whites and egg substitutes.

Vegetables.

This group has been highlighted in recent years as a rich source of antioxidant vitamins A and C which may reduce cancer risk. The fibre they contain helps the digestive tract function special types of vegetables called legumes are a low-fat protein source which may be substituted for the meat group when combined with nuts and seeds. Examples of legumes include kidney, chicken and baked beans. Starch vegetables such as corn and provide a great energy source.

Fruit.

Items from this group provide vitamins A and C along with carbohydrates and fiber.

Use the Food Guide Pyramid to help you eat better every day the Dietary Guidelines way start with plenty of Breads Cereals Rice and Pasta Vegetables and Fruits. Add two to three servings from the Milk group and two to three servings from the Meat group. Each of these food groups provides some but not all the nutrients you need.

Bread.

This group also includes rice and which fuel activity with complex carbohydrates. The whole-grain items have lots of fibre while all group members supply B vitamins.

Garlic is a good source of food inulin, sweetness without the calories. Inulin is one of the many functional foods said to have some health benefits. It is typically found in the roots or rhizomes of plants such as wild yam, Jerusalem artichokes and chicory Onions. Garlic and mushrooms are also sources of inulin. It is also now commercially added to foods to increase fibre content, prebiotics content and add no calorie sweetness although it has been reported that inulin has caused allergic reactions and added flatulence in sensitive persons but has no relationship to insulin, which is the hormone, produced by the pancreas to assist in the regulation of blood sugar.

Inulin is a type of carbohydrate from a plant source its structure has several simple sugars or monosaccha rides, linked together to create oligosaccharides Inulin is mainly made up of fructose units and is indigestible by most of the human enzymes of starch digestion such as ptyalin and amylase and therefore passes through most of the digestive tract undigested. This form of soluble fibre is metabolised in the colon by bacteria and can therefore create amounts of gas. Inulin is not broken down into monosaccharide’s so it will not cause an increase in blood sugar levels and can contribute to the prevention of high spikes in blood sugar levels, which occurs when most carbohydrate rich foods are eaten. Inulin has a range of sweetness from subtle to mild and from one third to a quarter less than the sweetness of sugars such as sucrose. It therefore contributes to the sweet taste of some products without the added calories prebiotic Inulin oroligofructose is added to commercial products also for their function as prebiotics. Prebiotics are those non-digestible substances that help the good bacteria.

To benefit from the Fibre in foods and the inulin content consume whole foods from plant sources daily including those foods which are a normal part of a healthy diet Its always important to benefit from the synergistic effect of the foods we consume rather than to rely on the magic of any one food or group of foods

We have all been there, we are ready to order our burger large fries and vanilla shake when that annoying little voice in the back of our head pipes up and says wait get a salad instead. We then proceed to ignore the voice and pig out anyway reminding ourselves to do several extra sit-ups at our next workout when ever that will be.

Fast food is a part of nearly everyone’s diet but is it a healthy part or a fat laced sodium loaded part. Is any of it in fact any good? Yes says registered dietician Joann Griffin You can make fast food a part of a healthy diet says.

Mrs Griffin who is also food service director for Aiken Regional Medical Centers – You can’t just have anything she says certain foods should be avoided like nuclear waste they include fried foods They’re usually easy to spot since fried is often in their names as in fried chicken or french fries and most burgers are still fried too although there are some exceptions Charbroiled burgers for instance are generally healthier.

The healthiest foods available at fast food outfits though are salads a word of caution pay particular attention to the dressing which is where the majority of fat and calories are hidden in salads Mrs Griffin places boiled chicken and roast beef on the next couple of rungs down on her fast food health ladder they are both high in nutrients and low in fat grading out at the bottom is any food cooked in lard which is beef fat. Any animal based product is high in saturated fat and should be avoided she explains you want unsaturated fats.

Any manager at a fast-food store should be able to tell you what cooking agents were used to prepare a food The Heart Association recommends that about 30 percent or less of the calories in our diet should come from fat The average person exceeds that figure by about 10 percent says Mrs Griffin Steering clear of fast-food breakfasts is another healthy way to curb fat intake reports the dietician.

The bottom line says Mrs Griffin is that fast food can be part of a healthy diet but it can also be deadly Make your selections wisely especially here This is a high risk area for heart disease she notes when choosing what fast foods to consume using your head will also likely increase the time that you can use your heart.

Nutrition is critical after heart surgery a healthy diet is an important part of a healthy life, but at no time is nutrition more important than following surgery, especially open-heart surgery. Nutrition guidelines for patients after open-heart surgery are divided into two phases: acute (immediately following surgery) and long term. In the acute phase, it is normal to have a poor appetite. Patients are encouraged to eat small, frequent meals until their appetites return to normal. A registered dietician will provide basic diet instructions based on medical history and the surgery.

A short time after leaving the hospital, the long-term phase begins. Patients are encouraged to make healthy food choices to prevent further damage to the heart and the surrounding arteries. The following are commonsense tips for eating a healthy diet after surgery: Eat a diet that is low in fat, saturated fat and cholesterol. A diet low in fats and cholesterol is recommended to prevent further build-up in the arteries. Animal products are a significant source of saturated fat and cholesterol in our diets so choose carefully. Skim milk, skinless chicken breast and fish are lean food choices as well as fruits, vegetables and grain products. Enjoy plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Choose at least five servings of fruits and vegetables each day to supply the body with lots of vitamins and minerals.

Fruits and vegetables are high in fibre, as are whole grains such as oats, whole wheat bread and whole grain breakfast cereals. These foods provide the foundation for a healthy diet according to the Food Guide Pyramid. Maintain or achieve a healthy weight. Carrying around excess weight can cause an added strain on the heart a healthy diet and exercise can help control weight. Check with your doctor before beginning any exercise program. Go easy on salt and sodium. Many people eat much more sodium than their bodies need. Too much sodium may cause fluid retention and negatively affect blood pressure. Eating fewer processed foods can significantly reduce sodium intake. Use sugar in moderation. Sugar provides no nutrition al value to our diets, just empty calories. Too much may increase triglycerides, blood sugars and cause weight gain.

Maintaining your health after surgery starts with small steps and a common sense approach toward eating. Remember that balance, variety and moderation are the keys to any healthy lifestyle changes.

If you are looking for a healthy, versatile way to include more protein in your daily intake, you can eat fully cooked dried beans, otherwise known as legumes.Legumes are also very low in fat, but full of minerals, vitamins, and both kinds of fibers: soluble and insoluble. Most vegetarians will tell you that they eat a lot of beans. There are many books on vegetarian diets, and feeding a vegetarian child. Beans and lentils can make the difference here.

Protein, Vitamins, Minerals, and Fiber
A terrific non-fat protein is beans. Just a cup of beans has 16 grams of protein, which is what you would find in a serving of chicken, or other meat. Beans are a crossover food, which means it counts as both a protein and a vegetable. Also, since beans are a plant, they have the fiber and nutrients of produce.

Many different countries include beans as a major feature of their diet. It is a very versatile item! Besides being versatile, beans are very high in fiber. Insoluble fiber is roughage, which you need to move food through your intestines more easily. This is the type of fiber that gets a lot of attention in the media because it helps fight the risk of cancer. Soluble fiber helps to process fats and other nutrients, and binds with cholesterol. It also slows down the body’s release of the carbohydrates in your food.

The American Diabetic Association recommends beans for steadying the body’s insulin. They also contain antioxidants, vitamin B 6, and folic acid. These also lower the homocystein levels in the body, which are related to heart attacks, strokes, and peripheral vascular disease. Up to 40% of patients who have heart disease have elevated homocysteine levels.

The only downside to a high fiber diet is flatulence. Add beans to your diet slowly, giving your system a chance to adjust to the new influx of fiber.

Cooking Beans
Canned beans are close to the same nutritional value of dried beans. Rinse them, first, to get rid of the salts and preservatives used when they were canned. It’s really better to use dried beans. Just follow the directions on the package. In general, bigger beans will take longer to cook. However, if you’ll be sure to soak the beans, then rinse them, and cook them in fresh water, it will help to prevent flatulence. They freeze well, and work well in soups, sauces, and other ways. Enjoy your new fiber diet, and add colon cleanse tablets to your intake for colon health.

Whole food, all-natural vitamins come directly from produce. However, as Earth’s soil became depleted, the food it produced didn’t have as many nutrients. The delicious fruits that we love are not as delicious, or as nutritious, as they once were. But, that’s ok, just some sugar and artificial flavoring, and you have supplemented your food. So, men made vitamins to go with the fake food we now eat. Synthetic vitamins are cheap to make, and should be just as good as the more expensive all-natural vitamins.

However, they’re not. Experiments have shown that polarized lights look much different when shined through synthetic vitamins versus all-natural vitamins. With all-natural vitamins, the light beam is refracted to the right, while with synthetics, it is split in ½. Fake, manmade vitamins only give you ½ of the nutrition you would get from vitamins that come straight from fresh produce. They are more advertised, though, because that’s where the manufacturers spend their money.

If you value your health, you’ll want whole vitamins along with your nutrients.

The danger of Ascorbic Acid
Ascorbic Acid is the fake vitamin C on the market. It can harm your body by making your arteries thicker in your heart. In fact, up to 2.5 times thicker!

The danger of Vitamin E
Fake vitamin E pulls out your body’s supplies of other vitamins and minerals. It can do more harm than help.

There is no way to substitute vitamins for the All Natural kind. Taber’s Medical Dictionary says that we need vitamins for good metabolism and proper growth. The Journal of American Medicine recommends that people take a daily multi-vitamin. If you don’t, your body will pay the price. So, take a multi-vitamin made from all natural foods, and take colon cleanse tablets to improve your health,

Nutrition has a lot to do with aging. Problems with nutrition as people age increase as chronic diseases and impaired organ function damage digestive functions, along with the processing of nutrients. Food may not be absorbed, metabolized, or excreted properly, and the nutrients in the food won’t be absorbed. It is estimated that 80% of senior citizens have a chronic disease. Nutrition can prevent chronic disease and help people recuperate from it.

One factor misunderstood in nutrition is that caloric demands change as we age. We have a higher percentage of body fat, and less lean muscle. The decreased activity that often accompanies aging decreases the calories burned. You have to figure out how to keep up the nutrition while decreasing the calories. To do this, you choose foods that are heavy in nutrients. Protein, for instance, is necessary at all ages, even though it may change because of restrictions.

It’s pretty east to reduce the overall fat intake as we age, and getting no more than 30% of our daily caloric intake is fat. Carbohydrates should, ideally, be about 60% of the calories we consume, with most of those being complex. We also become more tolerant to glucose as we age, and we need to eat fewer refined carbohydrates to ease the stress on our systems. We also need more dietary fiber and plenty of water to maintain the good bowel function. Fiber also helps to keep inflammation down in the intestines. Dietary fiber comes from vegetables, fruits, whole grains, seeds, nuts, and legumes.

One of the most essential considerations is the intake of water. Enough water will help your kidneys function better. Recommendations are for 5 to 8 glasses a day. Often as people age they don’t realize they’re thirsty. They become dehydrated. You should drink before you begin to feel thirsty. Elderly people should have plenty of fluid included in their diets.

Also with age people lose their sense of taste and smell. Often, the only thing an elderly person can taste salt and sugar, and they don’t want food they can’t taste. Also, as people age, they may lose their vision and have impaired cooking. You may not know how to read the prices on food or nutrition labels. You may even forget how to cook, or be afraid to. While these may not be complete losses, they can affect your ability to maintain a healthy diet.

As we age, we also have a change in our needs for electrolytes, potassium, and sodium. These can be affected by the drugs we take for heart problems and other chronic diseases. Fat-soluble vitamins are stored in the body, but older people often have a deficit in this. You may get a vitamin D deficiency since you don’t take as many dairy products, or get vitamin A toxicity. So, maintain a wide selection of items in your diet, especially of foods with a lot of calcium in them.

Your health and nutritional needs can be evaluated by your doctor. For any age person, a healthy diet and colon cleanse tablets can improve overall health.

Your diet may be short on certain important nutrients. However, supplements may not be what you expect them to be. You need to select the right nutritional supplements to complement your healthy diet, so that you don’t cancel out the nutrients. About 50% of Americans take supplements, but have of them don’t use then correctly, according to doctors. But, how in the world do you use supplements the wrong way?

Incorrect usage of supplements stems from poor understanding of the supplements themselves. Most people look for sale items, looking for the lowest prices on supplements available. However, this doesn’t mean that you get the best nutrition. If you already have a healthy diet, slow down and research the supplements you are considering. Low quality supplements, and there are a lot of them, put the majority of their budget into advertising, and not as much into research and development. They’re promoted as the “in” thing, and are always on sale somewhere. They also don’t dissolve in your system as well. They’ll usually just stay in your stomach, like a rock.

Choose a caplet instead of a tablet, because that your body will dissolve a caplet more easily. Since your body doesn’t dissolve tablets as well, meaning that you don’t get the full benefit of the nutrients in it.

Also, don’t take a supplement with just one nutrient. This will mess up the body’s nutritional balance. At the same time, a collection of several separate supplements won’t help you, either. You try to match them up and combine them to supplement your diet, when, truth be told, it really takes an expert to know what your diet is lacking.

Look for supplements that are labeled as having been tested in a laboratory. This means that they’ve been manufactured according to FDA regulations. While supplements don’t have to match these standards, those that are have gone the extra mile. Look, also, to see if they are “quality guaranteed”. These will be made by pharmaceutical-grade materials. Supplements that claim to be 100% natural are probably not that great, because you don’t really know what you’re getting 100% of. Finally, make sure that you stay within the expiration date, and take colon cleanse tablets to purify your system.

Health care professionals tell us that each adult should have 25 to 35 grams a day. In Western countries, the daily fiber intake falls well below those recommendations. Increasing your dietary fiber could certainly improve your health. Listed below is the fiber content, in grams, of common foods.

• Mixed grain or brown bread, 1 slice, 1.5
• White bread, 1 slice, .8
• Rolled oats, 1 cup cooked, 3.3
• Bran cereal, ½ cup, 7l5
• Rice, ½ cup cooked, .8
• Rice, brown, ½ cup cooked, 1.8
• Spaghetti, brown, ½ cup cooked, 4.2
• Banana, 3.4
• Apple, pear, orange, 2
• 50 g of prunes, dates or apricots, dried, 6.5
• 50 g of sultanas or raisins, 3.5
• 100 g of green peas, 5.3
• 100 g of corn kernels, 4.7
• 100 g of potato, peeled, cooked, 1
• 100 g of broccoli, 4.1
• 100 g of carrot, 2.8
• Sm. Can of baked beans, 9.5

Some questions many people have about fiber are:

“What is fiber?”
Healthy foods have an indigestible carb. This is fiber. Some fiber is soluble. These ar soft, mushy foods such as beans. Insoluble fiber is coarse and hard, such as bran.

“What good is fiber?”
Fiber pushes food on through your intestines. This keeps your body from absorbing toxins and carcinogens. It will also help metabolize foods, binding with the waste and aiding in elimination. Fiber also helps to eliminate toxic bacteria that abides in the colon. Fiber is also useful in helping people to lose weight, because it absorbs water. You’ll fee fuller and more satisfied all day. By including fiber in your diet, you can develop better eating habits, which will help you lose weight and have more energy.

“How much fiber do I need?”
Each person needs between 25 and 35 grams of fiber every day. People in most countries receive far less than that amount.

“Which foods will contain the most fiber?”
Usually, food in the natural state and not as processed will be higher in fiber. This includes whole grain, seeds, fruits and vegetables, and nuts.

“What does fiber accomplish in the body?”
Fiber goes from the stomach to the digestive system and into the large bowel. It is usually intact at this point, and absorbs water and waste. It is then passed out of the body in stools.

“Can fiber help Type II Diabetes?”
The New England Journal of Medicine stated, in May of 2000, that diabetic patients who increased their fiber intake to 50 grams a day has a 10% decrease in their glucose. That’s a lot of fiber – about 2x as much as recommended.

“What should I do to increase my fiber?”
The Clinical Nutrition Center, located at the famous John Hopkins Bayview Medical Center will give you great ideas for increasing your fiber.

“There isn’t a lot of fresh produce in my area. What can I do?”
You can take supplements to get your daily intake of your fiber. You can also take colon cleanse tablets to improve your health.

Year ago, synthetic vitamins were approved for consumption on the assumption that they would save humanity from processed foods that contained no nutrients. It appeared that Eden was back, because man-made vitamins are so much cheaper than all-natural vitamins. The belief was that these man-made versions would be more than sufficient to supply the nutrients normally gained from all-natural aids. But they were wrong. Now, general knowledge is that the synthetic, man-made supplements are poor substitutes for the real thing. It’s also known, now, that all-natural vitamins work best when combined with an intake of whole foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables.

However, now we know that synthetic vitamins are not just inferior. They are downright dangerous! Yet, somehow, most consumers are still unaware of this danger.

Why Are Synthetic Vitamins Dangerous?
If you don’t believe me, yet, here are a couple of examples.
1. Synthetic Vitamin C is Ascorbic Acid. This acid can actually thicken the walls of your heart! And yet, ascorbic acid is all over the marketplace. So, beware.
2. Synthetic vitamin E actually depletes your body of vital vitamins and minerals straight from your bones.

The bottom line is that you can’t substitute man-made products for All-Natural, Whole-Food vitamins and minerals. Nature knows best. You must have vitamins and minerals for your body to function properly, so make sure that your multi-vitamin has 100% RDA of every vitamin and mineral.

Taber’s Medical Dictionary states that vitamins are an essential part of human health. The Journal of American Medical Association¬ recommends that each person take a daily multi-vitamin. Poor nutrition has devastating health consequences, and since it’s so hard to get our nutrients from our daily diet, you should consider all-natural multi vitamins that come from whole-food sources.

As your body tries to compensate for nutritional deficiencies, it is weakened. It is not invincible. Don’t let the false advertising of vitamin manufacturers fool you. Your body deserves better care than that, and you deserve better health. So, get the whole-foods you need with natural vitamins, and take colon cleanse tablets to help rid your body of toxins.
